The ideal color analysis photo setup
- Stand beside a window. Face soft window light or turn slightly toward it. Avoid a beam of direct sun, which creates hard shadows and clipped highlights.
- Turn off indoor lights. Mixed daylight and warm bulbs can put different color casts on opposite sides of the face.
- Use a neutral background. White, soft grey, or a quiet neutral wall reduces colored light reflecting back onto the skin.
- Keep the camera level. Hold it around eye height and far enough away that the face and neck are visible without wide-angle distortion.
- Take several consistent photos. Capture a straight-on view and one or two slight angles without moving to different light.
What to wear—and what to remove
Wear a neutral top or drape a neutral towel around the shoulders. A vivid shirt can reflect color onto the jaw and influence the result before the analysis begins. Keep natural hair visible in at least one photo, but pull it back or cover strongly dyed hair in another if it creates a large warm or cool block beside the face.
Remove tinted glasses, colored contact lenses, and large reflective jewelry. If possible, avoid heavy foundation, bronzer, strong blush, lipstick, and colored eye makeup. Normal skincare and light, consistent makeup are less problematic than changing the routine between photos.
Camera settings that change color
Phones automatically adjust exposure, contrast, sharpening, and white balance. White balance compensates for the color temperature of the light; Adobe's white-balance guide explains why moving between outdoor and indoor light changes the correction a camera needs. For analysis, consistency matters more than manually choosing a precise Kelvin value.
- Disable beauty filters, skin smoothing, and social-media effects.
- Avoid dramatic Photographic Styles, filters, and edits that warm, cool, fade, or increase saturation.
- Do not combine screenshots or images downloaded from messaging apps if the original is available.
- Clean the lens and tap the face to set focus and exposure.
- Keep HDR and other automatic settings consistent across the entire set.
Good photo versus misleading photo

Why daylight photos can still look different
Real daylight changes with cloud cover, time, season, location, window glass, and reflected surroundings. The CIE uses standard daylight illuminants for repeatable color measurement and describes D65 as representative average daylight, but a home window is not a laboratory source. Auto white balance can also change between frames when a bright shirt or wall enters the scene. Locking exposure and white balance can help if your camera supports it, but most people will get a useful result simply by keeping the background, clothing, position, and light unchanged.
A 30-second checklist before uploading
- Indirect daylight is the only main light.
- The face is evenly lit without deep shadows.
- The background and clothing are neutral.
- No beauty filter, color filter, or heavy edit is active.
- The eyes, face, neck, and hair are clear.
- All photos use the same setup.
Once the images are ready, use the app for an initial result and confirm it through the at-home drape process. Photos estimate a direction; clothing and fabric comparisons show whether that direction remains useful in real life.
Color analysis photo questions
Is the front or rear phone camera better?
The rear camera may preserve more detail, but either can work when the image is sharp, evenly lit, and unfiltered. Consistent light and processing matter more than the camera label.
Should I use flash?
No. A small phone flash creates flat frontal light, sharp reflections, and a different color balance from the room. Use soft window light instead.
Can I use an old photo?
Only if you know it is unedited and the lighting is neutral. A new controlled photo is usually faster than diagnosing an unknown filter, white balance, or colored reflection.
